Packaging of Rugged COTS Systems

The benefits of rugged commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) computing systems are many: access to the latest technological breakthroughs; lower prices due to mass produced components; plus the resulting savings in time to market and technical risk.

In order to make the most of these benefits, it is common for system designers to use an existing rugged system as a model from which to create their new system. In most cases the application will require modifications to this model. However, starting with an existing system will usually allow the design process to proceed more quickly than starting merely with a list of specifications.

Rugged COTS systems must be packaged to perform in conditions which may include challenges such as thermal extremes, vibration, shock, electromagnetic (EMI), nuclear/EMP and human source hazards including intrusion and compromise. As a result, rugged COTS system packaging is a crucial element of system design, and can involve the full range of product development disciplines, from the creation of specifications to the completion of qualification testing.
